Scrolling through Instagram, I’ve noticed countless influencers and industry insiders styling it to perfection. At Fashion Week, attendees showcased myriad interpretations, while just this week, model Alex Consani paired a white lace skirt with chunky biker boots and a cosy, butter yellow knit, demonstrating the skirt's versatility.

Consani’s outfit exemplifies my favourite way to style the trend—balancing elegance with a casual, cool lean. If you prefer a more polished effect, swap the biker boots for sleek pointed-toe heels. For an everyday approach, try pairing your lace skirt with ballet flats or Mary Janes. As for tops, a slouchy knit adds an effortless feel, while an oversized white tee or a form-fitting tank creates a modern, minimalist look.

Fortunately, the high street is brimming with tempting options. H&M’s delicate white lace skirt immediately caught my attention mid-scroll, while Zara’s rich burgundy iteration has been on my mind ever since I saw it. Beyond the high street, designers such as Saint Laurent and Proenza Schouler offer elegant interpretations, while labels like Michael Kors, Baum und Pferdgarten, and Dries Van Noten have all woven the trend into their spring/summer 2025 collections.

Thankfully there's no need to get FROW tickets to find out which trends will surface in 2025, as stylish Europeans are filling our feeds with plenty of outfit inspiration from their home countries that I've been busily taking notes on. After hours of thorough research, I've rounded up the seven shoe styles that cropped up time again on the international style set, and I have no doubt these will be everywhere over the next year or so. Style Notes: You can always expect to get tons of style inspiration from Scandi women, but the one thing I didn't see coming was a heel. There's no need for bells and whistles when a pared-back and minimalist mule is all an outfit needs to look polished, and according to Parisians, a pointy toe is best worn with midi skirts or slip dresses and a longline coat for an easy outfit with a little je ne sais quoi.

Style Notes: Who could have predicted that the return of the slingback would cause such a stir that near on three years later we would still be discussing them at length? Well, we could actually. Not only does this eternally chic shoe look great with just about anything, but the popular kitten heel height is easy enough for all-day wear too. Spanish dressers have picked up on the power of a patent slingback in particular given just how great they look with tights during the cooler months, and there's something in this classy, "office siren" pairing that we expect to see much more of in A/W '25.

Style Notes: Mesh flats may have been the look du jour in 2024, but for 2025, I've noticed a uptake in the amount of embellished ballet pumps making their way onto the market. Dressy by day, and perfect for comfortably chic evenings, keep an eye out for studs, sparkle, and chunky adornments over the coming months, this elevated shoe is sticking around for another season and I couldn't be happier.

6. The Trend: Barely-There Sandals

Style Notes: A genius styling trick straight from Finland, take your summer sandal and make them winter-appropriate by adding a statement pair of tights. Chic, no? Anything that get more longevity out of the barely-there sandal has to be a good thing, not only do these heels never date, but their minimalist nature means you can wear them with just about anything (Milla's look being a case in point). Style Notes: Londoners know their way around a good trainer trend, and the genius of this style in particular is that is combines cool-girl kicks with undoubtedly the biggest trend to come out of winter 2024: luxe suede. I challenge you to find a trainer that looks more expensive than these, particularly in chocolate brown, and when your favourite pair of white leather sneakers just isn't cutting it, this is the alternative style that women in the capital are wearing in droves right now, particularly with a matching tote.

In fact, it turns out this newly coined “soft blur” term is pretty much the approach that French women have always taken with their makeup. So, what actually is the soft blur makeup look? To find out all the details, I spoke to makeup artist and founder of BAER, Scarlett Burton, and she gave me the low down on everything you should know…

What Is Soft Blur Makeup?

“Soft blur makeup is a flawlessly blended, soft-focus matte look,” Burton told me. “It enhances your skin, eyes and lips by making them appear smoother and more defined in colour—without any harsh lines or edge.”

"The key to this look is to use cream products that have matte finishes rather than dewy,” said Scarlett, “My favourite product for the soft blur trend is Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm, it's a matte cream which turns to a powder finish on the skin and really blurs pores, imperfections and gives an airbrushed finish to complexion.”

How To Achieve the Soft Blur Makeup Look

“For the skin, I would use matte cream foundations and really buff these into the skin with a larger fluffy complexion brush,” said Burton. “Then, I’d shape with a cream bronzer or contour product, applied with the same fluffy brush, rather than from the applicator." I'm also a big fan of a cream blusher to help achieve the soft blur look.

"For the eyes, I would lean to matte cream or liquid eyeshadows or even blushers if you fancy that pinky/bronze tone, and really buff these out with a small fluffy brush. Lastly, for the lips, I would use a matte lip tint or lipstick and use a very small fluffy brush to apply this. That way you will achieve a diffused colour immediately without having to blend.”

Style Notes: With expensive taste in footwear but also impossibly flat, wide feet, I’m always searching for elegant, comfortable heels that won’t break the bank. So, I’ll admit, I was targeted on Instagram for Realm Shoes and dubious about ordering—boy, am I glad I took the plunge. “I couldn’t find a footwear brand with slow fashion values that truly resonated with me, so I decided to create my own,” founder Leah Gibson tells me. “Working as a buyer at a fast fashion retailer, I loved the industry but felt disconnected from the constant cycle of trend-chasing.” Classic silhouettes and small-scale manufacturing mean Realm’s shoes are made to last, adhering to Gibson’s principle that “quality and longevity are non-negotiable”. I invested in the Knee Boots (£220)—the kind of style that I’d been searching for over a decade. 2. UNDER THE RADAR

Style Notes: I’ve watched the Italian luxury brand Tod’s go from being known for their instantly recognisable Gommino loafers to becoming one of Milan’s chicest names for, well, everything. Under the relatively new creative directorship of former Bottega Veneta head designer of ready-to-wear, Matteo Tamburini I’ve witnessed first-hand from the runways of MFW a niche developing for smart, hard-working, sophisticated clothes and accessories that aren’t quiet luxury but aren’t loud either—just right for a grown-up wardrobe. While perusing Net-a-Porter’s vast handbag offering I came across the T Timeless bag. How did I not know about this perfect style already? Well, it’s very easy to get distracted by the big fashion houses’ seasonal It bag launches. This alt stood out to me as a solid purchase that lives up to its name—I can’t imagine this understated tote ever being out of fashion. While it is still an investment at just over £1.5k for a medium silhouette, I think it’s worth acknowledging that many luxury brands now demand £4k upwards as standard… and I’m yet to be convinced those would be better quality.

“3-piece suit for women… in or not?”

Style Notes: A great question from one of our Instagram followers and it is very well-timed. The 3-piece suit has been a strong fixture over the past year and spring/summer 2025’s runways show no sign of tailoring slowing down. There is a strong shift towards traditional workwear attire being reconfigured for the modern day. Although last year’s trending waistcoat is still a piece that stands up, Saint Laurent leads the charge for a new take on suiting, combining oversized tailoring with mix-and-match shirts, ties, overcoats and more. So it’s really about finding a formula that you like!

"The '60s bob is a short, jaw-length bob that is chunky through the outline giving plenty of movement and bounce through the ends," says Cos Sakkas, three-times British Hairdresser of the Year and Toni & Guy global creative director.

'60s bobs have plenty of volume at the roots and a luxurious swing or bounce through the lengths. "It’s all in the detail—the '60s bob has that little bit of extra polish and sophistication," says Sakkas, who says this is a versatile hairstyle you can wear in various partings. "The '60s bob is effortless and cool. It’s a nod to the past but totally modern and it looks great if left to dry naturally or softer when blowdried," he says.

"The great thing about the bob is there is a shape to suit every face shape," says Sakkas. "The oval face shape is the luckiest as all bobs suit this face shape, especially the '60s bob," he says.

How To Style a '60s Bob

"As with any styling, try to keep touching it to a minimum to avoid it frizzing," says Sakkas. "Apply Label.M Anti-Frizz Smoothing Balm (£26) through the mid-lengths and ends and leave to dry naturally, or blow-dry with a big round brush (or a hot brush) for a more polished finish," he says.

"Alternatively, set it in hot rollers for that ultimate '60s bouncy finish," says Sakkas. "Once it’s set, keep your fingers away; if you must touch it, use the end of a comb to prevent it frizzing and flopping out of shape."

For anyone like me who struggles with winter blues, take reading this as a sign. I've found my cure and it doesn't require a SAD lamp or a countdown to spring. It's simply a trip to the mountains, where winter weather isn't hated, but rather relished and embraced. Sounds cheesy, doesn't it? But trust me, nothing makes you more glad to welcome January than the promise of a ski trip.

Picture this: you wake up (if you’re a really passionate skier, then to the sound of your alarm for the first lift), get yourself a hot breakfast, maybe a couple of coffees and a croissant or two. You then hit the slopes, where you spend a few hours improving your snow plough or parallel turns. Maybe you’ll stop for a spot of lunch. Hot chocolate? Oh go on! Maybe a beer? How about two. Then you do an extra couple of runs for good measure, there’s nothing like a bit of Dutch courage to get you down Le Face. After skiing down the mountain, or some cases, sliding down the mountain, you hit the spa—you have a swim, then make your way for the steam room, sauna and cold plunge pool, maybe you get a massage. You meander back to your room before heading our for a bit of fondue and après ski, and end it with a fantastic night’s sleep in your gigantic bed. Tell me—can life get any better than this?

If you're wondering where the hottest spots of The Alps are, trust me when I say Val d'Isère (or 'Val' as its affectionately known), is up there. And if you're wondering where to stay (spoiler: it's at the Experimental Chalet), where to eat and of course, what to wear on and off the slopes, you've come to the right place.

To enjoy a ski holiday, is to enjoy a stay at one of Experimental group's chalets. Its original chalet outpost is in Verbier, Switzerland, but its latest venture is where I stayed, in Val d'Isère. With interiors by the group's lead interior designer Dorothée Meilichzon, it's an eclectic mix of mid-century-style furniture, fabrics and a colour palette that echo the seventies (and reminded me so much of London's The Standard) and finishes that allude to its alpine location—think branch-like door handles, side tables made from logs and the pièce de résistance, the rounded stonework fireplace in the lobby. There are two restaurants, a bar and a large spa (all of which I get to below), and the rooms are beautifully-designed with Savoyard touches, well-equipped and have picturesque views from every side.

For me, the best thing about Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère, is that whilst it has just over 100 rooms, and has all the offerings of a larger hotel, it possesses the feel of a boutique lodge or chalet. There's so much attention to detail and service that it feels luxury yet unpretentious, and it's clear they've thought about the few hardships and grievances that can come with a ski trip. Take their basement boot and ski room, for example, where not only do you store your equipment, but you can hire it from here too—everything from skis, snowboards, boots, poles, helmets and the like, and you can purchase all the necessary accessories, which saves you a trip to the local ski shop.

Whilst you’d be forgiven for thinking fondue had its moment back home decades ago, going to the Alps without having raclette is said to be a sin. Experimental Val d'Isère's restaurant L'Aiglon is dedicated to fondue, tartiflette and raclette, which is a must. Its other restaurant, L'Aiglon D'or, is a stylish brasserie option that offers both French classics and international favourites, so whether you’re in need of carb-loading after a day of skiing with a burger and fries, or you’re celebrating with champagne and oysters, this menu will match your vibe. But it was perhaps the hotel’s bar, the Experimental Cocktail Club which is the one I have fondest memories of. With its swanky seventies-inspired interiors, top notch playlist (with live DJs playing on the weekends) and a bar full of annoyingly good-looking, charismatic and well-dressed staff, the vibe is ideal for pre-dinner drinks or post-dinner parties, depending on how dedicated you are to the first lift the next morning.

La Folie Douce:
Perhaps the most famous mountain-side club group in the Alps, and the one you've likely seen on TikTok, La Folie Douce is host to many DJs and performers.

Arctic Juice & Cafe:
Cute cafe that offers probably the best barista coffee in town, as well as pastries, and as the name suggests, juices.

Naturally, we can't talk about a vacation to the mountains in winter without talking about skiing (or snowboarding). What makes Val d'Isère so popular is the range of slopes and the conditions. A fellow journalist and expert skier said to me, "If there's snow in France, there's snow in Val." On this trip I was lucky enough to have perfect conditions: ample snow with blue skies and sun every day. If you're a beginner, Les Trois Vallées is a perfect region, with plenty nursery slopes as well as blue and green runs for once you've perfected your snow plough. And if you're advanced like me (read: not at all like me), then you can conquer La Face de Bellevarde, the infamous black that hosted the World Cup and Winter Olympics.

For those hitting Les Alps less interested in winter sports and really looking for R&R, then Spa by Experimental is definitely going to be your main hang out spot. With an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a Nordic ice bath, you'll hardly get bored. What's more is its menu of Dr. Barbara Sturm facials and massages, some of which have been created specially for those who have exhausted themselves on the slopes.

Because ski gear is designed to protect you from the elements, it’s always been notoriously expensive. Nowadays however, there are brilliant rental platforms and affordable brands offering options that make dressing for the slopes much more accessible. If you want to go designer, my suggestion is to rent. There are a few places to do this, but IMHO, Blanqo is the best because they specialise in ski wear, and have the best selection of brands. Not only can you get chic winter staple brands such as Goldbergh, Perfect Moment and Poivre Blanc it also stocks a range of cool-girl favourites such as Shoreditch Ski Club and Snowroller.

When it comes to being off the slopes, personally, I like to stay on theme. If you’re more of a classic dresser, seek inspiration from pre-millennium Sloane Ranger style, where yuppie types in the '80s and '90s would adopt accessories like sleek tortoiseshell sunglasses and headbands that should be worn with cashmere après jumpers and neat puffer jackets that cinch in the waist. If like me you lean towards a more streetwear vibe, go for loose-fitted silhouettes like cargo trousers and oversized pull-over jackets, that are most commonly adopted by snowboarders, and style them with sportier sunglasses and chunky, rounded snow boots.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for using my manicure as a form of self expression. I love scrolling through nail art ideas and dabbling in playful nail polish shades come spring. It should go without saying that my ultimate piece of advice is to go for whatever makes you happy—there is no wrong move that you can make. But when it comes to down to the nitty gritty (i.e. the trends I'm actually willing to recommend), I'm keen to make sure they're not fleeting. I can't be the only one who can't keep up with what's hot and what's not on the nail front, after all.

And because 2025 is the year of timelessness and classics when it comes to our manicures, I'm approaching spring with a different outlook this year—minimal manis that spark joy. And when I spoke with two of my favourite manicurists around, they confirmed that it's not just me feeling this way—everyone wants to ditch dated nail colours and busy designs for Spring 2025. So, without further ado, these are the 9 spring nail trends everyone can get on board with this year.

1. Satin Nails

This is, hands down, my favourite nail trend for spring—and I can't wait for my next manicure so that I can give it a go. "This spring, it's all about super-chic, glossy nails with a hint of sparkle," says celebrity manicurist, Iram Shelton. "The fresh, clean look of short nails combined with a shimmery finish is not only trendy but also practical and elegant. It's a nail moment everyone can achieve both at a salon and home," she adds.

And the thing that I love most about this look is the way it can be adapted. For classicists like me, the satin finish can be achieved with a very slightly iridescent polish. However, if you want your manicure to pack more of a punch, you can go for something notably shimmering.

2. 3D Nails

There's no doubt that 3D nail art is gearing up for total domination in Spring 2025. If we're looking at a microtrend level, this year is going to see a big moment for 3D jelly nails. "It leans heavily into K-beauty nail trends that all have this juicy, glossy finish. You can take it up a notch by adding a French tip or futuristic 3D elements like bubbles, droplets or a sculpted design using a clear 3D gel. A generous layer or two of topcoat is essential for that glass-like effect," says manicurist, Lois Samantha.

But, if like me you're planning to steer clear of microtrends for the upcoming season, that's not to say you can't get in on the 3D nail art action. Pairing a simple, minimalist polish with a statement 3-dimensional element, like the above pearls, is unbelievably chic. My top piece of advice? Keep any 3D designs firmly in the hands of professionals—I can't tell you how many times I've tried to make these looks work for myself at home and failed miserably.

3. Coffee Tones

For those who prefer dark nail colours, you'll be thrilled to hear that this year's Pantone Colour of the Year (Mocha Mousse for those who aren't acquainted) isn't going anywhere for spring—yes, brown nails are here to stay. "Brown will be the colour of choice this spring," says Lois Samantha. "Mocha Mousse plays a part in this, but we're also seeing a resurgence of boho fashion, led by the likes of Isabel Marant and Chloé. We'll be seeing various iterations of brown, from light latte and golden caramel to deep mahogany and everything in between."

And Shelton agrees, as she also dubs brown to be the season's biggest nail shade. "Choose a light, cashmere-soft brown for a subtle look or a deeper espresso shade for a more dramatic effect. Apply a single coat for a chic, polished finish and apply a topcoat to seal it in," says Shelton.

4. Crème Fraîche

Backstage at Chanel's Spring/Summer 2025 show, minimalist manicures took centre stage with Chanel Le Vernis Ballerina. And this is truly all the proof I needed that milky, creamy hues would continue to be a favourite for spring. Obviously the French manicure isn't going anywhere for spring—it's a hit season after season. While summer calls out for a colourful French manicure, this spring we're set to see more transitional shades used on skinny tips. This look lends itself to the overarching 2025 spring nail trend for 'less is more'.

6. Micro Art

Micro nail art has been bubbling away as a somewhat dominant trend over the past couple of years but has often been overshadowed by louder microtrends. Now, spring 2025 is micro art's time to shine.

"[Expect] anything you could possibly imagine, from food to animals, in teeny-tiny nail art form. It's a great way of adding interest without committing to a huge design," says Lois Samantha. If you're keen to get creative yourself, make sure you are equipped with the right tools. "A super-fine brush will be your best friend for this. If you struggle using your non-dominant hand, try painting your art onto a silicone surface. Once dry you can peel it off to create a sticker," she adds. My preference as a non-artist? Pre-packaged nail stickers.

7. Mirror Nails

I'll be honest, often when I see that metallic nails are trending I don't get that excited. Something about traditional nail polishes in silver and gold tends to just fall a bit flat. But this spring it's not about just any old metallic polish—it's about high-shine, mirror-like finishes. This look is best executed with professional products at a salon, but if you want to get in on the action at home, opt for a super-shine polish and finish up with a glossy gel-like top coat.

8. Garden Mani

Okay, I know that this one is somewhat similar to the micro nail art trend mentioned earlier, but it's just too good not to mention. Yes, florals for spring can be groundbreaking—and this dainty design proves it. Flowery nail art comes around every year, but for 2025 it's about making those flowers less cutesy and more classical botanical. Pair your design with a sheer, neutral base for a truly timeless look.

9. Short Shapes

We have been talking about almond shapes a lot in recent seasons, but for spring this year we're set to take a softer, more natural-looking approach to our manicures. In recent months, everyone I have been speaking to about nails has expressed a desire for shorter, oval-shaped manicures. "We're seeing a move to more practical and natural nail shapes," says Lois Samantha. "Unlike almond or coffin shaped nails, oval can be achieved on short nails yet still creates that elongating look. Position your nail file at a 45-degree angle, and file in a gentle sweeping motion. You can then focus on the sides, but remember not to narrow them too much as this can cause stress cracks."

Leighton Meester stood out to me in an ethereal Dior dress complete with glistening gold flecks. Turning everything I thought I knew about trainers on its head, the no laces trainer trend burst onto the scene this season and it gaining serious pace.

A movement in its own right, all of a sudden, so many of my favourite trainer brands are producing sneakers sans shoe laces. Beyond creating a streamlined silhouette and a directional finish, I can't help but find this trend more playful than others. In lieu of laces, labels have experimented with velcro straps—reminiscent of the styles we all wore before honing the skill of tying said laces—or with sleek, flat tongues or, in some instances, drawstring closures.

This isn't just a fluke—trainer brands of every sort have started to experiment with the emerging look. Adidas recently re-released its covetable Taekwondo trainers, set on a super-slim sole and complete with a laceless design. While Nike's Air Rifts—designed without laces, instead featuring a velcro closure and a split-toe design—have sold out over and over. Salomon has produced mary-jane-inspired pairs and Isabel Marant seems to be entirely done with laces, favouring straps instead.

For me, laces feel entirely fundamental to the makeup of a trainer, which is exactly why this emerging trend feels so striking—it totally reimagines a silhouette we've become incredibly comfortable with.

While the trainer trend took me by surprise, in hindsight, the clues have been there for a while now. We've seen trainers get increasingly experimental in recent seasons, bringing a wave of ballet trainers as well as "ugly" and unconventional styles to the fore—all of which have helped to pave the way for this emerging trend to bloom.

While these trainers feel more unusual than traditional styles—and might strike you as tricky to wear—I actually find that their playful design makes them easier to style than you might think. Some find that exposed and knotted laces can look a little messy with certain outfits—I regularly see people tucking their laces into the sides of their trainers to create a more streamlined finish. Eliminating laces negates this need.

On a slim-sole base, these trainers pair with slouchy jeans and fitted trousers, but if you opt for a ballerina-inspired style then a skirt and dress pairing looks playfully put together.

B-Corp is a for-profit organisation that originated in the U.S. in 2006. Over the past two decades, the company has served as a proverbial yardstick that measures a company's "entire social and environmental impact."

What Is a B-Corp Fashion Brand?

B-Corp fashion brands are independently substantiated and subject themselves to scrutiny to confirm they meet "high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability," says the organisation’s website. Analysing five areas across the business—including community, customers and environment—B-Corp fashion brands are appraised and measured to ensure they comply with ethical codes. This process is rigorous, involving assessment and regular review to guarantee all claims are credible. It’s not for the lazy—or for brands who can’t back up declarations of being "green" or "kind to the planet."

How Does a Brand Become B-Corp Certified?

To become a B-Corp fashion brand, labels will undergo a certification process that involves a review called the B Impact
Assessment. After reviewing areas like supply chains, carbon footprints and charitable giving amongst others, businesses will then be rated based on their responses. Only companies that achieve above 80 points on this scale will become B-Corp fashion brands.

Taking this step is proof that the brands (including those below) take their output and its outcomes seriously. These are brands that have duly documented how the business manages its supply chain, pays its workers and works towards mitigating land and life loss, in addition to meeting other benchmarks. B-Corp companies go beyond avoiding certain fabrics treated with toxic chemicals and often work to pioneer next-gen fibres. They’re actively playing a part in combating the textile waste crisis and providing solutions to what happens to clothes once we no longer want to wear them.

Discussing these concerns can sometimes feel like a heavy topic—the exact opposite effect of the serotonin boost you get when your latest purchase finally arrives in the post. But driving industry change, encouraging circularity and reducing climate impact is part and parcel of designing a gorgeous garment that you’ll (hopefully) cherish forever.

So, I consider myself incredibly picky about what I put on my lips. From the Dior lip oil to Merit's Shade Slick, I'm usually swayed by the luxury brands and the sleek packaging that accompanies them. That was until I discovered Byoma's Lip Oils (£10).

Byoma Liptide pH Lip Oil

The one I was most excited to try was the Liptide pH Lip Oil (£10). This lip oil reacts with your skin's natural pH levels, which promises to deliver a custom pink flush to your lips while hydrating and plumping.

The formula itself is a plush oil that cushions the lips with a glass-like shine, without the stickiness you typically get with a traditional lip gloss. The extra large doe-foot applicator hugs lips and bestows just the right amount of product in one swipe. So far, a great first impression.

It also has a slightly sweet pick 'n' mix type of scent, but this isn't hugely noticeable on the lips.

After Using Byoma Liptide pH Lip Oil

A minute or two after swiping on the lip oil, I noticed a pink flush of colour that appeared on my lips. I'm not usually a pink kind of person, but surprisingly liked the result of the pH-reactive hue.

The lip oil itself remains mostly clear, but gives your lips a natural-looking stain underneath, so even once the gloss has worn off you can enjoy a hint of colour.

The lip oil itself feels really nourishing. I'd liken it to the feeling of wearing a thick lip balm or lip mask, but with the glassiness of a lip gloss. It has a more cushiony sensation on the lips rather than the silky slip of a thinner lip oil. For this reason, I actually found this to be more long-lasting than other lip oils I've tried.

As for my lips, they felt intensely hydrated long after the gloss had worn away, with not a hint of dryness.

Two Hours After Application

Above is how the pink stain looks after a couple hours of wear. Even though the lip oil had worn off, the pink hue is definitely still noticeable and stays true to the initial hue that developed when I initially applied it. At this point, my lips still felt suitably nourished and hydrated.

If you'd rather a clear formula from you lip oil, then this one if for you. It features the same hydrating arsenal of ingredients (peptides, avocado and tamanu oils) in a glossy lip oil formula.

Again, the extra large applicator generously coats lips in a glassy, mirror-like gloss that instantly made my lips look and feel plump. Incredibly, like the pH version, it doesn't have a hint of stickiness to it and the formula leaves my lips feeling softer and hydrated. Some lip oils tend to dry out my lips even more, but that's not the case with this one.

It looks great worn alone, but also paired with lip liner. I used mine with a little of Rimmel's Lasting Finish Lip Liner in Cappuccino (£4) here and I loved the result.

The Verdict

As a former lip oil snob, I can say that these £10 lip oils from Byoma are brilliant. If you want an affordable lip oil formula that rivals some of the luxury counterparts out there, these are definitely worth a try.

I'd highly recommend trying the pH version, which will give you a pretty flush of pink long after the lip oil has worn away. Or, if you're more of a minimalist then I'd suggest going for the clear version, which looks great worn alone or with your favourite lip liner for an everyday lip combo. Expensive-looking hair is a journey, not a destination. A luxurious mane does not hinge upon a specific expensive-looking hair colour or haircut but a commitment to at-home and in-salon techniques that help strands appear shiny, vibrant, and full of eye-catching depth. If that last one gave you pause, you're certainly not alone. I recently booked a colour refresh with master stylist Julie Dickson at her New York City salon, where she suggested not only golden, honey highlights but also some darker chestnut pieces (aka, lowlights) scattered throughout. I was a bit hesitant, but she assured me that it ties the entire look together, and lo and behold—she was absolutely right. My natural-looking hue appeared significantly more put together, sophisticated, and just plain rich. Ready to secure a luxe-looking mane of your own? What are highlights?

First thing's first: Let's go over some hair colour basics. "Highlights are lighter strands added throughout your hair to create brightness and contrast," explains celebrity hairstylist and colourist Eduardo Ponce. "They mimic the effect of sunlight hitting your hair and give a fresh, vibrant, sun-kissed appearance."

Essentially, if you're hoping to lighten your natural hair colour, highlights are a great route to take. There are a smattering of different types to choose from depending on your hair goals, such as babylights, money pieces, balayage, chunky highlights, and so on.

What are lowlights?

Lowlights, on the other hand, are sections of hair darker than your natural base colour, meant to add dimension or tone down hair that's become too light.

"Lowlights are essentially the opposite of highlights," adds Dickson. "They involve adding deeper, richer tones to your hair instead of lighter ones. This creates dimension, enhances your natural colour, and adds depth to your overall look. They are used to add contrast or give your hair a more balanced, multidimensional appearance, especially if you feel your colour has become too light or flat."

What's the difference?

In short: Highlights brighten, while lowlights darken and add depth. "Think of lowlights as shadows that add richness and highlights as beams of light that enhance contrast," notes Ponce.

While we're pitting them against each other for the purposes of this article, just know that one isn't necessarily "better" than the other; in fact, according to Dickson, everyone can take advantage of both techniques. "Lowlights are great for hair that’s been overly highlighted or sun-bleached, as they restore depth and dimension while making your highlights stand out and appear brighter," she shares. "Highlights, on the other hand, can be subtle and spaced out for a soft, natural 'kid hair' loo, or applied more densely to create an overall lighter, brighter effect."

Can you mix them together?

Yes—and you should! "I always add both highlights and lowlights," says celebrity hairstylist and colourist Dimitris Giannetos. "If you just keep adding highlights to the hair, your hair color is going to lose depth." Think of it like contouring and highlighting your face with makeup; without a healthy balance of light and shadow, the look can wind up falling flat. "Depth from the lowlights and brightness from the highlights create a balanced, multidimensional look that creates a natural and sophisticated vibe," adds Ponce.

That said, combining them is a delicate dance, and the amount of each will depend on your specific head of hair, bone structure, and the overall look you're gunning for. For instance, Dickson might commit to highlights for face-framing pieces in order to accentuate the eyes, or she could add more lowlights to an area to help old highlights pop.

How to Apply Them Both

The application process itself is pretty much the same for lowlights and highlights. "Both involve selecting specific, targeted pieces of hair to apply the colour to and painting down from the top to end of the hair," says Giannetos. The difference lies in the placement of the dye (and the colour, of course).

Everyone's exact placement is different—again, it depends on the specific look you're hoping to achieve—but Dickson always likes to add a few extra touches of both for a natural-looking effect.

"Natural colour is darker at the roots than the ends, and for natural-looking results, we want to avoid root-to-end stripes," she explains. "There will always be root-to-end placement with both highlights and lowlights, but with highlights, I like to add a few extra panels on the ends, and with lowlights, I add extras from roots to the midshaft of the hair."

Do lowlights cover greys?

Yep, they sure can. "Lowlights are a great way to blend greys naturally without completely covering them, especially if your greys are subtler versus all over," confirms Ponce. You might want to add some strategic highlights to disguise the greys entirely, but lowlights are certainly a great way to make them less noticeable.

Can you apply lowlights on dark hair?

Another resounding yes from the stylists! "Most of my clients with dark hair have lowlights," declares Giannetos. "You wouldn’t immediately notice that’s what it is, but when you look at someone and see that their brown hair feels rich and vibrant, it’s because of the dimension created with the lowlights."

Don't get me wrong—a gloss is always a good idea. However, lowlights can often make the deep strands appear even more vibrant. "Sometimes with natural fading over the years or [being] in the sun or water a lot, brunettes can get brassy or dull. Panels of lowlights can add depth and richness," adds Dickson. "It’s quite impactful in making the hair look healthier and more put together." Your hair might not look darker, necessarily, but it will look richer—think bold, full-bodied, expensive-looking strands.

How would you describe KOIBIRD's approach to interior design?

KOIBIRD’s style mirrors what it offers in fashion: bold, unique, colourful items with unexpected design elements that carry a sense of adventure and individuality, making it perfect for those who want their living space to feel like an art gallery or a vibrant space full of treasures with a story to tell and a personality to express. Be it glassware, vases, lighters, cushions, plates or any objects, they all have a sense of fun, wit and an artisanal flair.

If we were to walk into the store on any given day, what would we be likely to see?

Design studio Uchronia has overhauled the KOIBIRD boutique in Marylebone, London, introducing an eclectic gradient colour scheme and details including a giant planet sculpture and a floor made from painted lava stone. A bright, futuristic palette was used, with green blending into pink and purple in the store's main room, with a surprise disco room in the back for the interiors section, all clad in disco-style mosaics.

As Uchronia put it, silver represents transformation, serving as a visual metaphor for the evolution and versatility that defines KOIBIRD's identity. [Also] new is the KOI 11 nutrition café, housed inside the store with its own unique molecular purple branding and a menu of 11 treats featuring supplement and nutrition-focused drinks and sweet bites.

What aesthetic style, era or vibe is speaking to you the most right now?

I really like what Uchronia is doing in interiors right now, introducing a lot of colour and playfulness but in a grown-up, sophisticated way, without looking childish. I like new and interesting ways to play with colour that are elevated and reminiscent of walking into a contemporary art painting.

What are some of the best bits about the London store?

We are located in the amazing Marylebone Lane, which has great energy and a chic community feel. [There are] so many great restaurants, coffee shops and stores, and we feel like we are in the perfect neighbourhood for our brand. Our immersive store experience has always been the draw; it’s a unique place to discover new things, and now with the addition of KOI 11, we are spreading that sense of discovery to food and drink.

I think the way forward in retail spaces is to incorporate all the different experiences a consumer wants when they go to a space, which includes discovering new fashion, cool new objects and enjoying a health-driven, visually tantalising drink and a snack.

What are some of the best buys you have invested in for the store recently?

One new clothing brand we are very excited about is Françoise, a French luxury upcycling brand that emphasises sustainability by creating unique pieces from luxurious vintage fabrics, all produced in Paris. The collection includes silk dresses, tailored shirts and modern trench coats, with a commitment to crafts[person]ship.

We also are excited to carry Giovanni Gerosa this season, an Italian luxury brand which features crochet dresses, silk shirts and knitwear, all distinguished by their unique textures and vibrant colour palettes. The collection is a bit of a dreamland, a journey into colourful, handmade garments that are unique and special.

Whose interiors might we find in your Saved folder as inspo?

My inspiration folders are very vast; I am not inspired by any one style or era, but it’s a whole mixture of worlds, from various vintage imagery to Verner Panton, Jacques Lagrange, Studio Peregalli, Wes Anderson and Jacques Lacoste Gallery, and I love Instagram feeds like @__dreamspaces and @decorhardcore.

How do you refresh interior trends for each season?

It’s very much based on a feeling, a mood, a theme, but always staying true to the brand. It was driven by travel destinations in the past where the store had a very strong destination location theme. However, since COVID, we stopped focusing on that and started doing more general themes and inspirations from movies, to hosting party themes and then moving more into an art focus.

In the past few years, the store focused on art collaborations, for example with Mexican artist Rafael Uriegas, who painted the whole store in one of his murals, and we have collaborated with Salon 94 in NYC in the past to feature Kwangho Lee in our Korean concept. This season, we just wanted a fresh, cosmic, futuristic vibe that complemented the addition of the café, and Uchronia brought that to life.

KOI 11 allows shoppers to eat and drink adaptogenic and probiotic food and drink alongside their shopping experience. How did you come up with the concept of the wellness space, and what does it mean to KOIBIRD?

KOIBIRD’s purpose is a sense of discovery and finding something unique, interesting and aspirational, and we wanted to translate that to food and drink. Personally, I am quite a foodie but also very health-focused, and I’m often at a loss when I go to cafés, as most carry the same drinks that I don’t drink (coffee, for example, or bad-quality matcha), which are loaded with fatty milk or full of additives and syrups, and the snacks are all sugary and high in nuts; and always contain dates, bananas and unnecessary fats that are not nutritious in the amounts consumed.

So, I wanted to create a food and drink place that is exciting, fresh, different, guilt-free and nutritious. [It's] the perfect place for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon drink and snack when the lull sets in and you don’t want to have a full-on dessert but [rather] a nourishing treat. I wanted a place where I could have as many drinks and bites as I wanted knowing there was nothing "bad" in them. And they are delicious!

What are some of your favourite items on the menu?

[It] depends on the time of day! I actually don’t like coffee, but I like our adaptogenic coffee called The Way You Make Me Feel because it has a mix [we call] Happiness, which promotes hormonal balance and moods. I also love our fig leaf and apple cider vinegar tisane called Suga Killa, which has amazing blood sugar benefits, and as I am a protein-shake drinker (only at home, as I often find in external locations, they are full of "bad" things!), I also love our matcha and ube collagen protein shake called Beauty and a Beast.

What are your favourite trends to shop now at KOIBIRD?

We don’t really buy into trends, nor do I shop [them], however, if I had to pick what my favourite themes are at the store, I would say crochet and artisanal items. We also have a special artist collaboration in March, which involves an artist who produces vases and vessels that look like they are made out of piped sugar!

Where are your personal favourite places to shop for:

- Vintage/Antiques: Resee, Jean Vintage, Vestiaire for vintage fashion, Rose Uniacke, Golborne 44 and The Apartment.dk for antiques. Anemone Interiors for some wild '80s pieces. For antiques, I go to auctions a lot. Invaluable is a great app for various smaller auctions.

- Affordable pieces: Collagerie is a marketplace that has a good mix of high and low, and it's very well curated. I look on Etsy a lot too for cute things, even small vintage decorative items like Limoges porcelain, little figurines or old Belleek china.

- Luxury investment pieces: 1st Dibs; there is something for everyone on there.

- Textiles, accessories and decorative finishing touches: I tend to look for antique textiles where possible. My favourites would be Fortuny and Rubelli. I love Uchronia’s furniture and accessories to add a dose of fun, and then a lot of my decorative fishing touches are KOIBIRD or random antiques I find at auctions, markets and mostly on my travels. There is also a cute feed on Instagram called Octopuses, with lovely little things. And in the U.S., I am always browsing Houses and Parties. It's such a fun online store.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to redecorate their space?

- Small changes can make a big difference. Move furniture around to different locations or different rooms. It freshens things up and perhaps you'll find a better place for things.

- New paint colour can also make a big difference. Perhaps experiment with borders around door frames, wallpaper in bookshelves, stripes on floors, etc. Painting or decorating the bones can change things up a lot. Then you can add small decorative items like cushions, blankets, trays, books and candle holders. I tend to like a theme or an animal, then I start to collect things in that theme. Right now, it’s roosters!

- If you want to do a bigger redo, make sure you are crystal clear that it will always be more expensive and take more time and effort than you initially think! Be honest from the outset about what it is going to take.

- Redecorating is a rebirth. It’s a chance to start fresh and a new blank canvas, and that is so exciting, as life doesn’t afford us many of those. So, if you have had a breakup, if you are down, if you are going in a different direction in life, if you are living in a space you don’t feel is a real reflection of who you are anymore or if your space has bad energy (if it doesn’t make you happy, calm and content) you should definitely redecorate.

If you haven't heard, Dior has just released not one, not two, but three solid perfume iterations of famous Miss Dior fragrances. It is easily the coolest beauty launch of the entire season, and I've been desperate to get my hands on one of the scents.

If you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of solid perfumes as they are ideal for throwing in your handbag and topping up your scent throughout the day. Not only that, but by applying these scents directly to the skin, you can literally smell them all day long.

However, when Dior's solid perfumes arrived at my desk for me to test, I have to admit that I was a little confused. Each fragrance comes as a translucent pink stick that looked a bit like jelly. It's safe to say that I have never seen anything like this before, but I was intrigued. I've spent the last week putting these floral perfumes through their paces, and have shared all of my thoughts below...

Dior Miss Dior Mini Miss Solid Perfume Review

The Formula

First things first, we have to talk about the formula. When I saw that searches for "Dior jelly perfume" were on the rise, I knew I wasn't the only one confused about how this product works. As it turns out, it's pretty clever.

The solid fragrance is completely alcohol-free (making it a great choice for those of you who are more sensitive to perfume) and is enriched with rose wax which leaves your skin feeling silky soft. The jelly-like texture is so easy to rub onto your neck, décolleté or wrists and it contains a highly-concentrated version of the Miss Dior scents, designed to leave a lasting trail. So far, it gets a big yes from me.

The Scents

As mentioned above, you can currently purchase the Mini Miss perfume in three iconic scents, and I've outlined every single one below.

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum Mini Miss

If you're a fan of the classic Miss Dior Eau de Parfum, then this is the one for you. The bestselling scent has been transformed into a solid version with a bright, floral bouquet at the heart of the fragrance. Notes of lily-of-the-valley, peony, iris and rose burst on the skin, before drying down to a base of warming vanilla, sandalwood and musk.

This feminine, floral scent is utterly captivating, and will earn you compliment after compliment.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet Mini Miss

This is definitely the most uplifting fragrance in the collection. It is an eau de toilette, so it doesn't typically have as much scent projection as an eau de parfum, but it's perfect for those of you who don't like anything too overpowering. It contains notes of citrusy bergamot, sweet rose and fresh white musk. Although it opens on a zesty note, it dries down to a powdery base that adds a beautiful softness to the overall scent.

Whenever I apply this, it reminds me of the first days of spring, where I'm floating around in my nicest white dress and picking up a bunch of peonies from my local flower market.

Miss Dior Parfum Mini Miss

Now, if you like something a little more intense, then this fragrance is for you. If you didn't know, Francis Kurkdjian, French perfumer and perfume creation director at Dior, recently reimagined the Miss Dior fragrance with more intensity. The result? Miss Dior Parfum.

This intense interpretation is dominated by notes of jasmine, which heightens the floral accords and takes the fragrance to a whole new level. The addition of mandarin also adds a juicy touch that makes the scent even more delicious. However, a base of cedar and moss add an earthy feel which makes this perfume feel like an incredibly sensual, grown-up version of your favourite Dior scent.

The Packaging

Now, we have to talk about the packaging. Have you ever seen a perfume look so chic? Each scent comes housed in a solid case woven with a houndstooth pattern. In my opinion, this is the ultimate fashion accessory for this season and beyond.

What makes this product so great if that unlike other solid perfumes I've tried, you can simply remove the lid and swipe the perfume straight onto the skin. It's a completely foolproof design that makes applying your fragrance quick and easy.

The Longevity

You might be wondering, does this perfume actually last on the skin? I was definitely sceptical, as not all solid perfumes have impressive lasting powers, but this one has genuinely blown me away. I apply my chosen scent in the morning and can still smell it on my wrists that same evening, even after a very sweaty tube journey home from work. One thing I will say is that the lighter scents don't last as long as the Parfum, but I was still impressed by the overall scent projection.

This might go without saying, but seeing as you can't spritz this perfume onto your clothes, it creates a more intimate scent experience, meaning other people might not pick up on your fragrance as much. I personally love to pair the solid perfume with my usual Miss Dior scent so that I'm getting the best of both worlds.

The Verdict

All in all, I have fallen head over heels for this fragrance launch. Not only are these perfumes the chicest things I have ever seen, but they have made topping up my scent so quick and easy. In fact, I don't think my handbag can ever be without this product now.
